Immunosenescence comes of age

چکیده

Introduction Ageing of the immune system (immunosenescence) contributes to the increased susceptibility of the elderly to infectious disease and to the poor outcome of vaccination. Defence against pathogens is compromised mainly because of changes in adaptive immunity mediated by T and B lymphocytes; however, all components of the immune system are affected (Fig 1). Dissecting the crucial alterations responsible for dysfunctional immunity in old age will facilitate the development of rational interventions to reconstitute appropriate immune function. Given the increasing proportion of elderly people in most countries and their disproportionate consumption of health-care resources, this issue is rapidly gaining in importance. The meeting, which was dedicated solely to studies of immunosenescence, filled two days with the ‘A to Z’ of immunity, covering topics ranging from development to senescence, innate immunity to adaptive immunity, and genes to environments, in organisms ranging from mice to monkeys and humans. Understanding and eventually modulating immune dysfunction in the elderly now beckons.

Immunosenescence in some but not all immune components in a free-living vertebrate, the tree swallow.

A wide diversity of free-living organisms show increases in mortality rates and/or decreases in reproductive success with advancing age. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying these demographic patterns of senescence are poorly understood. Immunosenescence, the age-related deterioration of immune function, is well documented in humans and laboratory models, and often leads to increase...

Immunosenescence and the gut microbiota: The role of probiotics and prebiotics

The global population is becoming increasingly older presenting medical and economic challenges to society. One factor associated with the aging process is immunosenescence, which may be defined as the decline in immunity with age, and represents a potential causative factor for many age related illnesses. The profile of the gut microbiota is also known to alter with aging and these changes hav...

Oxidative Stress and Immunosenescence: Therapeutic Effects of Melatonin

Age-associated deterioration in the immune system, which is referred to as immunosenescence, contributes to an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, autoimmunity, and cancer in the elderly. A summary of major changes associated with aging in immune system is described in this paper. In general, immunosenescence is characterized by reduced levels of peripheral naïve T cells derived fr...

Age-specific variation in immune response in Drosophila melanogaster has a genetic basis.

Immunosenescence, the age-related decline in immune system function, is a general hallmark of aging. While much is known about the cellular and physiological changes that accompany immunosenescence, we know little about the genetic influences on this phenomenon. In this study we combined age-specific measurements of bacterial clearance ability following infection with whole-genome measurements ...
